DROP by Mad Sound Factory is a fully analog semi-modular groovebox and experimental rhythm synthesizer designed for live performance, generative sequencing, and hands-on sound manipulation. Developed around a non-traditional analog architecture, the instrument combines clock generation, noise synthesis, analog percussion circuits, and modular patching into a compact standalone performance system. (Mad Sound Factory)

Unlike conventional drum machines or sequencers, DROP generates evolving rhythmic structures through analog clock division and modulation rather than step programming. Its internal timing system is based on an analog LFO clock generator connected to a six-stage clock divider, enabling continuously shifting rhythmic patterns and non-repetitive sequences. (Mad Sound Factory)

The synthesis engine consists of several interconnected analog modules:

  • VCO tone generator
  • analog noise generator
  • dual LFO modulation section
  • clock divider
  • low-pass filter
  • analog saturation stage
  • discrete germanium transistor output amplifier (Mad Sound Factory)

The VCO section includes:

  • main oscillator
  • one-octave sub oscillator
  • two-octave sub oscillator
  • dedicated click oscillator
  • analog FM modulation
  • envelope-controlled pitch modulation
  • discrete punchy analog VCA (Mad Sound Factory)

The noise generator section features six different analog noise and harmonic modes capable of producing percussion, metallic textures, chaotic resonances, tonal signals, and unstable rhythmic structures. The noise circuit includes analog FM, voltage-controlled amplitude modulation, variable decay envelopes, and a dedicated “Mad VCA” feedback distortion stage. (Mad Sound Factory)

DROP incorporates two independent LFOs:

  • LFO I functions as the primary clock generator and reaches audio-rate frequencies
  • LFO II provides triangle and square modulation outputs with variable waveform shaping and three selectable frequency ranges (Mad Sound Factory)

A central element of the instrument is its banana patching system. All modules expose CV and trigger inputs/outputs, allowing extensive rerouting, modulation feedback, and interaction with Eurorack, Buchla, and other analog modular systems. The conductive banana connectors also permit direct tactile interaction using cables, metal objects, or fingers as modulation sources. (Mad Sound Factory)

The signal path passes through the “Ordinary Magic Bee Jelly Technology” analog saturation circuit developed by Zvukofor Sound Labs. This stage introduces asymmetrical waveform clipping, harmonic distortion, transient shaping, and analog saturation characteristics ranging from soft compression to aggressive germanium-style overdrive. (Mad Sound Factory)

DROP is designed as both a standalone instrument and an expandable modular performance system. Its architecture emphasizes unpredictability, tactile interaction, analog instability, and improvisational control rather than fixed sequencing workflows. The result is an instrument capable of producing everything from industrial percussion and experimental techno rhythms to ambient drones, fractured textures, and chaotic electroacoustic soundscapes.
